Sketches by John Singer Sargent, 1883-1919.
Sargent has been getting a lot of love here recently, and that is because he had a wonderful eye for portraits and conveying personalities. He was not just a painter of the gentry, though. His painting and sketches during the First World plainly display the horrors that soldiers went through and still have the power to stun and move. He is very underrated.
